Introductory Note to Irenæus Against Heresies

[3366] John viii. 34.

[3367] A word of which many explanations have been proposed, but none are quite satisfactory. Harvey seems inclined to suspect the reading to be corrupt, through the ignorance and carelessness of the copyist. [Irenæus undoubtedly relied for Hebrew criticisms on some incompetent retailer of rabbinical refinements.]

[3368] Matt. xii. 29.

[3369] Jer. xxxi. 11.

[3370] John i. 3.

[3371] Ps. xxxiii. 6.

[3372] Ps. 115:3.

Chapter IX.—One and the same God, the Creator of heaven and earth, is He whom the prophets foretold, and who was declared by the Gospel. Proof of this, at the outset, from St. Matthew’s Gospel.

[3373] Gen. xv. 5.

[3374] Rom. ix. 25.

[3375] Matt. iii. 7.

[3376] Matt. iii. 3.

[3377] Matt. i. 20.

[3378] Matt. ii. 15.

[3379] Matt. i. 23.

[3380] Ps. 132:11.

[3381] Ps. lxxvi. 1.

[3382] Num. xxiv. 17.

[3383] Matt. ii. 2.

[3384] Luke i. 33.

[3385] Ps. lxxvi. 1.

[3386] Isa. lxv. 1. [A beautiful idea for poets and orators, but not to be pressed dogmatically.]
