The Coming Increase of Christ in His House
Chapter 1: The Emerging Child of Promise
[1] A spiritual Ishmael is simply whatever God’s people attempt to bring forth in His name instead of waiting for His grace to lead us forward in His own timing.
[2] This is not to suggest that Jesus somehow attained to the status of deity; He was as much God at His birth as He was throughout His life. God had become a human, and as the God-man, He lived out for us in human terms the perfect expression of both humanity and deity. As a man, He grew in wisdom, stature, and in favor with His Father and with those to whom He had been sent. (Luke 2:52)
[3] Since the Jews have returned to their own land, they are now one of those nations. In Israel there is a growing band of Messianic believers in whom God is arising to reveal His glory.
[4] It is also true that there have been times when sins of arrogance, moral failure, and lust for political power, etc. have marred the Church’s record. But without God’s people, the world would be a much darker place.
Chapter 12: The Triumph of Life
[5] Paul’s theme of receiving the abundance of God’s grace and the gift of His righteousness clearly has to do with the Church age prior to Christ’s return.
[6] This is not to imply that proper teaching and understanding of Christian doctrine is unimportant; it is crucial. But let us not gather to mere teaching, but to Him who would open His Word to us.
[7] Jesus said He was both the way and the life (John 14:6). The word “way” in Greek is HODOS meaning a road. Therefore He is both the road by which life is found and He is the life to be enjoyed while on the road.
Chapter 14: God’s Glorious House
[8] This is not to deny or draw attention away from the sovereign outpouring of the Holy Spirit that Israel will experience in that day (Zechariah 12:10).
Chapter 15: A Barrage of Stories
[9] I’m rephrasing Jesus’ well-known words: “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” But I’m emphasizing the prophetic power of His command to let hearing occur. Whatever was hindering the ability to hear would now be rendered inoperative in those who wanted to understand. They would now be able to perceive God’s message and Messenger.
[10] The pain in their lives due to their sinful choices had in fact turned out to be God’s plow preparing them to receive the seed of His Word.
