The War for the Soul of the Church
[1] See Jeremiah 51:24 - 25, Habakkuk 3:6, Daniel 2:35
[3] Think of the disastrous results of Ananias and Sapphira’s decisions to lie to the Holy Spirit in a time of abundant visitation (Acts 5).
Chapter 4: God’s Triumphant Grace
[4] Since Paul had written a strong letter to the Corinthian church (i.e., 1st Corinthians), he began to wonder if he had been too tough on them. To see if the relationship had been damaged, he sent Titus to ascertain the situation. When Titus met him in Macedonia, he was able to encourage Paul with the report of their love for him, and their mourning over their sin (2 Corinthians 7:5 - 16).
[5] The idea is that of a Roman conqueror leading his captives in a triumphal procession in Rome after a great military victory. Since Christ’s great victory at Calvary, we have all been captured by the love of God and have willingly given ourselves to follow Him wherever He would take us.
[6] This thought seems not to have been considered by many environmental activists.
[7] This is not to say that God has not mightily used large churches over the years. Obviously, He has.
[8] Of course, the full revelation of God’s sons will only occur at the full revelation of God’s Son (i.e., the second coming of Christ). Clearly, it will be at His appearing that we will be fully like Him for we shall see Him as He is. Until then we are maturing spiritually in Him and growing up into His likeness. Our lives both individually and corporately are reflecting to some degree what is in the heart of the Author whose abode is eternity and whose stationery is the hearts of His people.
[9] As important as the Bible is (it is God’s holy word, inerrant in its original manuscripts) it has always been a means to an end. God’s intent was that through reading His word, His people might come to know Him more intimately so that through them He might reveal His glory (John 5:39-40, 2 Thessalonians 2:14).
Chapter 8: Christ, Arising in the Midst
[10] GINOMAI means to become. This word is also translated to arise – And a great windstorm arose (Greek, GINOMAI), and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling (Mark 4:37). When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising (Greek, GINOMAI), he took water and washed his hands before the multitude (Matthew 27:24).
EK means out of.
Finally, MESOS can be translated as both the midst and among. Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst (Greek, MESOS) of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among (Greek, MESOS) them (Luke 22:55).
[11] While there is much conjecture and assumption, there is simply no biblical proof that the antichrist and the man of sin are the same individual. Paul never uses the term “antichrist” in his writings. And John never uses this term in the Book of Revelation.
[12] The fear of the Lord is not about being afraid to come to Him; it is about being afraid of the repercussions if I turn away.
[13] It is important to note that Paul’s warning in these verses is in the context of believers exalting men in God’s house (1 Corinthians 1:12, 3:4 - 7).
[14] While it is true that Paul will receive great reward on the final day, it is not true that the ex-thief will suffer loss. Even though this man’s life had been filled with great sin, the blood of Christ was and is endued with much greater power and cleansed him totally. Indeed, while he will not know the same degree of reward as Paul, he will not experience that as loss to himself, but will rather rejoice in God’s just blessing.
Chapter 13: Removing The Religious Spirit
[15] See Matthew 23:6 - 10
[16] The fact that this fullness comes in among us (see Romans 11:25) as over against being accomplished or achieved by us indicates that we can never attain on our own to the fullness of God’s intention for us. He is our only hope. We must invite and receive Him and His work into our midst.
[17] Not so much unbelieving as slow to believe.
