Body, Soul and Spirit
To become a Christian is to begin a personal journey into that mysterious realm of the Spirit. This book has been written to provide a guide for this journey.
It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words; I have found this to be true. Several years ago the Lord revealed to me a simple graphic image, a representation of body, soul and spirit, that made it much easier for me to understand spiritual truths and to teach others. This is what I wish to share with the reader.
Since God created man in His image, there is an important and necessary spiritual dimension to our being. We are made up of body, soul and spirit. Those three divine “building blocks” have been designed and woven together by God so that we may know Him, serve Him and become like Him. Our maturity in Christ, our relationship to Him and His people, and our sphere of service are intricately related to the role of the Holy Spirit in these three component parts of our being. The heart of understanding these things, and of yielding to the Spirit of God, requires that we distinguish and separate what is soulish from what is spiritual.
The scripture that is the basis for the graphics of this book is Hebrews 4:12, where God declares that His word is sharper than any two-edged sword to pierce and divide between soul and spirit. All information that we will ever receive in this life comes to us via one of two avenues; either through our five physical senses by which we relate to the world around us, or through spiritual senses which are our interface to the spirit world. These two avenues, or sources, are essentially windows into our soul. The graphic images in the text illustrate these two windows to visually distinguish between soul and spirit with a clarity that would be difficult to convey by words alone.
Psychology is the secular science of mind and behavior. Since this discipline does not recognize the redemptive influence of Gods Spirit on the spirit of man, it is not pertinent, and therefore is not considered. When Christian counselors mix Bible truths with psychology the power of God’s word is compromised. The goal of counseling is to produce a godly change in character of the counselee. The graphics in this book will clarify and make more understandable the Bible truths used by counselors to teach and confront others on behavior and personality.
