Chapter One. Life on the Ground – the Street-Fight
[18] Sin is the tendency for people to disobey God. Death symbolizes all of the bad consequences of sin. It includes not only physical dying, but also sickness, emotional pain, lost opportunities, etc. (“… the wages of sin is death …” Romans 6:23)

[37] The larger catechism of the Westminster assembly defines providence like this: “God’s providence is His completely Holy, wise, and powerful preserving and governing every creature and action, ordering them all to His own Glory.” The Westminster Larger Catechism in Modern English, Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Question 18
Chapter Ten. The Right Word at the Right Time

[40] A generational curse is a sin or group of sins that is passed down from one generation to the next. “… For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.” Exodus 20:5-6 (emphasis added)
[41] Somewhere around 1995, the laws were changed in my state to prohibit smoking in public buildings.
[42] I learned how to interpret dreams from the book, Exploring the World of Dreams, Benny Thomas, Whitaker House, 1990. I also found the following tape series helpful, You Can Know the Voice of God, available at http://bennythomas.org.

[53] When I watched Halloween, I had already read Sexual Healing and was making my way through the material on the Mastering Life Ministries web site. I figured that as long as I was investing so much time into David Kyle Foster’s Christian work, I might as well check out his pre-Christian work. I also knew that God sometimes gave me helpful insights when I watched horror movies.

Chapter Fifteen. Sobbing Through the Neighborhood
[59] The Fairytale Stronghold is a way of thinking in which we believe that God will almost magically change our hearts so that we quickly take on His character without going through the difficulty of gaining wisdom. I wrote about it in Exchanged Glory III: Wise as Serpents, 78-79

[62] James Dobson, Parenting isn’t for Cowards, Word Publishing, 1987, 95-101
[63] Though the statement, “God hates the sin and loves the sinner” expresses a valid truth, I believe it is overly simplistic. Psalm 5:5 says that God hates more than the sin; He also hates the sinners. Like us, He is capable of feeling both love and hate at the same time. His hatred is a form of righteous judgment that causes Him to send people to Hell; His love causes Him to offer mercy. Two thousand years ago it inspired Him to send His Son to die for those He both loves and hates so they could be with Him forever in Heaven.
[65] With what I now know, I would have immediately told my mother she needed to go to the emergency room. If her problem had been a stroke, quick action could have helped a great deal. As it turned out, waiting a week didn’t make much difference.

[70] I was also taking antihistamines at the time, which aren’t particularly good for your prostate. Also, the prostatitis developed at about the same time that I embraced self-hatred as a strategy for dealing with the smoking fetish. It is possible that when I embraced this spiritual disease, it opened the door to a physical disease.

[73] Here is my current answer: Though I believe that there are situations in which privately acting may be acceptable (like to treat prostatitis), it is usually a selfish sin. With all sin, there are spiritual, emotional, mental, relational, and physical consequences. So though privately acting out may help a man’s prostate, the consequences that come with it are usually not worth the benefits. That is why after initially relying on frequent ejaculation to treat prostatitis, I eventually turned to other methods.
[74] I recently ran across a web site which describes what can happen if a serious bacterial infection in the prostate isn’t treated, www.webmd.com/content/article/45/1688_50841: “Acute bacterial prostatitis requires prompt treatment, as the condition can lead to bladder infections, abscesses in the prostate or, in extreme cases, completely blocked urine flow. Left untreated, the condition can cause confusion and low blood pressure, and may be fatal.”

Chapter Twenty-Two. Sex and the Middle Aged Man
[79] Cadden, Exchanged Glory III: Wise as Serpents, 71-79
[80] I read an article many years ago in which a group of married Christian men were asked what intimacy in marriage meant to them. They all answered, “frequent sex”. I suspect the men would have given the same answer to many questions about marriage. “What would make your wife’s cooking taste better?” “Frequent sex.” They had an answer looking for a question.

Chapter Twenty-Four. Cain, Able, and Seth
[84] I realize I will be reading a good deal into this Genesis 4 scripture. Please bear with me as I use Cain, Abel, and Seth as a prophetic allegory. I do this only to introduce what I will explain in much more scriptural detail as we look at the book of Ecclesiastes.
[85] Sin is the tendency for people to disobey God. Death symbolizes all of the bad consequences of sin. It includes not only physical dying, but also sickness, emotional pain, lost opportunities, etc. (“… the wages of sin is death …” Romans 6:23)
[86] In the rest of this book, when I refer to the “hebel of life,” I am referring to the effects of sin and death.
